Last for now of these recent concert wrap ups is Sonic Youth, which I saw last night. I only know a handful of their songs and really wish I knew more because they were really great live (even if I didn’t have the closest spot). It’s crazy to think that here’s a band that’s been around for some 30 years or so and is still as excited as ever about making and playing music. It was absolutely packed as Prospect Park was filled to capacity but the energy of the crowd was really great. After every song there was a wild roar.
One of the songs I did know was the amazing closer “Expressway to Yr Skull”. Before writing this post I went to play it and realized it wasn’t even on my iTunes. I guess I had remembered it from a few years ago. The beginning of that song really does just grab your attention. The militaristic drumming is epic as was the insane freakout at the end of this song (the guitar was great but the drums were awesome last night). Such a great way to end the night.
I’ll be brushing up on my Sonic Youth listening throughout the next few days from this.
Also, I realized the day before that Grass Widow was opening (which I has posted about just a few days ago) and they were amazing! They reminded me a lot of Tiger Trap but they had a more aggressive sound. Lots of catchy guitar lines and three part harmonies. So if you haven’t listened to them yet definitely check them out.

Grass Widow - Shadow
A lovely watercolor animation in black and white to match a minimal, grungy, and kinda quiet homage to riotgrrl tunes and simpler times. Pre-order the San Fran band’s upcoming LP, Past Time out soon on Kill Rock Stars.
