This first taste of Bradford’s new album is exploring sounds I’ve really come to enjoy recently. It’s minimal and mellow acoustic approach showed up on Halcyon Digest in “Sailing” as well as his (clearly Neil Young influenced) explorations on Bedroom Databank Vol. 3. I’ve praised his prolific output and talent before and can’t wait to hear what he’s been working on.
The epic 4 1/2 hour video chat with Deerhunter (Bradford Cox & Lockett Pundt) is now up on Yowie. Go check it out but prepare yourself first. Take the longest interview ever in small doses of awesome.
This weekend I had the pleasure of listening to the new Deerhunter album Halcyon Digest. I also had the oppurtunity to sit in on a live chat with Bradford Cox and Lockett Pundt. I am a dork and took notes so here’s what I jotted down.
First of all, I had two questions of mine answered. The first of which was “What is in your Netflix queue? (as Bradford kept jokingly referring to his average day being full of boredom and Netflix movies).
My second question was “What is your favorite Neil Young Album?” He said On the Beach. The following bullet points are the scattered notes I took, because I am an obsessive music nerd.
Hope you enjoyed the fun facts. Also: Halcyon Digest is nothing short of AMAZING. So go find it and download it now, but please support the artist and invest in some vinyl!
This here is the official video for Deerhunter’s second single, “Helicopters” from their upcoming album, Halcyon Digest (out September 28). “Revival” and “Helicopters” are the best singles I’ve heard this year. I mean it’s just as good as Teen Dream sounds. I can’t fucking wait for this record as it’s probably going to be one of the best of the year.
New Deerhunter, baby! Alright well I think this is ‘Revival’- there should be a B-side floating around out there somewhere too. I will have a look. From the upcoming album Halcyon Digest This is a nice song, Pitchfork describes it as ‘shimmery’ and I can’t think of a better descriptor-it’s already made me decide to listen to Deerhunter all day. They are way up there on my non-existent list of most favoritest things of all.
I love the direction this band is going in. After their last EP, Rainwater Cassette Exchange, and Bradford Cox’s stunning second album, Logos, as Atlas Sound I’m definitely seeing a sunnier sound to their sound. Go to their website here to download this single as well as the b-side “Primitive 3D”. The b-side is totally using some surf sounding guitars and I totally love it as well as the piano part at the end.

Here’s an amazing concert I found of Deerhunter playing the Noise Pop Festival in 2009. I forgot just how great this band is. They simultaneously enjoy lulling you into a hypnotic state and waking you up from that with searing guitars and amazingly tight drumming. Plus, the lighting at the beginning of this concert is frickin’ awesome. It’s so dreamy and ethereal and totally goes with their blanket of sound.
Also, if you happen to be in New York in a few weeks Deerhunter is playing a free show with Real Estate at Pier 54. I can’t wait!

Indie idol Bradford Cox and his Deerhunter buddies return with their fourth LP, dubbed Halcyon Digest, on September 28 via 4AD. The crew is promoting it in a throwback-DIY style by urging fans to download the above poster at their new website, print it out, photocopy it, and tape it to their favorite lamp post and/or bathroom stall and/or anywhere else.
Devotees who take a picture of their street team’s handiwork and send it to flyers@halcyondigest.com will be rewarded with an e-mail linking to the album’s first single as well as a non-album cut in a couple weeks. Who says the internet can’t lead to tangible goodness? Click here for more info.
